Preserving progressive, multicultural voices of Los Angeles area activists and philanthropists.

Richard Gunther

Dick Gunther is an activist and philanthropist who has used his wealth in creative ways to benefit his community and to expand and enhance his view of the world.

His childhood lacked the kind of deep emotional support that would have benefited him as he began to make his way in the world and to compensate, he became driven to succeed as a real estate developer, building thousands of homes in the San Fernando Valley and South Bay areas of Los Angeles.

He found an anchor in his loving wife Lois, and their three sons.

Dick has always had a great sense of curiosity and adventure and a fascination with the mysteries of the Universe. By the time he was thirty four, he was pulling away from business to seek out other adventures, both internal and external.

Immersing himself in psychotherapy, spirituality, scientific and pseudoscientific endeavors, and experimentation with psychedelic drugs, he began to travel the world with his family.

These adventures opened him to a deeper understanding of himself that led to service and philanthropy.

“Everything that is tearing us down today will become a memory, and this memory will be shared as an anecdote or a story or a poem or a play or a warning. It will be shared with another human being, who will then understand that he is not alone in his sadness. This is why we show up for others and tell our tales and listen to others. The great congregation meets daily, and you are someone’s angel today.”
